The life I love - The pianist Menahem Pressler The music world has known Menahem Pressler for more than half a century and mainly for his work with the famous Beaux Arts Trio. He was the heart of this ensemble and when in 2008 the trio decided to separate, it was not the end for Menahem Pressler's career - in fact it was the start of a most remarkable and successful path as a soloist and in 2013, the 90-year-old grand seigneur of the piano gave his long overdue debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 'The life I love - the pianist Menahem Pressler', from talks with Pressler over excerpts from one of his Master Classes, to interviews with artists like Daniel Harding, Quatuor Ébène, Leonidas Kavakos or Daniel Hope, we will gain deep insights into the life of this enchantingly "venerable prodigy". Electronic Vibrations - A sound changes the world Whether techno or hip-hop - electronic music is nowadays the driving force of pop culture. We have almost forgotten that its origins lie in the WDR's electronic studio, which made Cologne to one of the centres of the avant-garde during the post-war years. This is the story of how a room full of strange devices would become a cabinet of curiosities, the vibrations of which sent the whole world in a state of ecstasy. From the beginnings directly after the Second World War in Paris with Pierre Schaeffer's 'musique concrète', the film focuses on Stockhausen and goes on to Kraftwerk, from Jean-Michel Jarre and the IRCAM studio right up to Detroit to the beginnings of techno. Recorded at Berlin's Tempodrom, the Deutsche Symphonie-Orchester Berlin and its chief conductor Robin Ticciati present Richard Strauss's 'An Alpine Symphony' as a musical and philosophical mountain hike with the legendary mountaineer Reinhold Messner. The concert leads us through the Alps, lets the audience pass flowering meadows en route, through thickets and underbrush, over mountain pastures and glaciers to the summit, and finally the descent surrounded by thunderstorms. Messner provides insights into the physical and psychological borderline experiences of his mountain ascents and speaks about extreme situations, the perception of nature, and his mental state on the night before departure, during the conquest of the peak, during the long, onerous descent and the exhausted, contented return home.

The life I love - The pianist Menahem Pressler The music world has known Menahem Pressler for more than half a century and mainly for his work with the famous Beaux Arts Trio. He was the heart of this ensemble and when in 2008 the trio decided to separate, it was not the end for Menahem Pressler's career - in fact it was the start of a most remarkable and successful path as a soloist and in 2013, the 90-year-old grand seigneur of the piano gave his long overdue debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. In 'The life I love - the pianist Menahem Pressler', from talks with Pressler over excerpts from one of his Master Classes, to interviews with artists like Daniel Harding, Quatuor Ébène, Leonidas Kavakos or Daniel Hope, we will gain deep insights into the life of this enchantingly "venerable prodigy". They are well-known for their ability to shift their style across a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop and jazz. Jiří Pokorny's "Words and Space" is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate, and very poetic. "Phoenix" is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth once again. Choreographer Philippe Kratz tries to understand who we were and what we are capable to become. In "Narcissus" Giuseppe Spota takes a look at the youth of today. Electronic Vibrations - A sound changes the world Whether techno or hip-hop - electronic music is nowadays the driving force of pop culture. We have almost forgotten that its origins lie in the WDR's electronic studio, which made Cologne to one of the centres of the avant-garde during the post-war years. This is the story of how a room full of strange devices would become a cabinet of curiosities, the vibrations of which sent the whole world in a state of ecstasy. From the beginnings directly after the Second World War in Paris with Pierre Schaeffer's 'musique concrète', the film focuses on Stockhausen and goes on to Kraftwerk, from Jean-Michel Jarre and the IRCAM studio right up to Detroit to the beginnings of techno. In a conversation interspersed with fascinating archive footage, Richter presents us with his memoirs from beyond the grave. Composed of two seventy-seven-minute episodes, this film is among those that leave a lasting impression.

This unusual ballet was inspired by terrible events in the life of choreographer Young, who lost his daughter, niece, and nephew in a terrible fire during a family vacation.
