Opera Now: George Benjamin OPERA NOW is a six-part documentary series hosted by Vasco Mendonça, a composer with a passion for contemporary opera who is committed to introducing the general public to this unique world. In each episode, he presents a landmark work of the 21st century through interviews with composers, directors, and singers... Magic Moments of Music: Sergiu Celibidache & the Berliner Philharmoniker Directed by Holger Preuse and Philipp Quiring

Celibidache rehearses Bruckner No. 9 Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache (conductor) In his late years, Sergiu Celibidache (1912-1996) focused his attention on one particular composer: Anton Bruckner. In March 1991 he rehearsed Bruckner's Ninth in unusually long and intense sessions with the Munich Philharmonics. Using unpublished footage, this film shows the individual stages of this tantalizing process of a seemingly familiar piece being rediscovered. Again and again Celibidache interrupts the musicians to communicate his sharply articulated thoughts. Theory and practical work aren't opposed anymore. In addition to the rehearsals, the film also shows interviews with Celibidache and accompanies him to St. Florian, near Linz in Upper Austria, where Bruckner was buried. Wagner's Jews Richard Wagner was notoriously anti-Semitic, and his writings on Jews were later embraced by Hitler and the Nazis. But for years, many of Wagner's closest associates were Jews - young musicians who became personally devoted to him, and provided crucial help to his work and career. Why were they drawn to him? And how could Wagner even accept their embrace? These questions are at the heart of 'Wagner's Jews', the first film to focus on Wagner's complex personal relationships with Jews. Rivalry in Music - Callas vs. Tebaldi Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi were the two most famous sopranos of the second half of the last century. Turned into hostile enemies by their admirers, the two became untouchable goddesses of opera. For their fans, Callas was known as "the tigress", Tebaldi as "the voice of an angel": the two singers could hardly have been more different, whether in their professional or private lives. To this day, Callas remains perhaps the greatest soprano of all time. Her rival, Tebaldi, is best known to opera lovers. Why is the posthumous fame of the two prima donnas so different? Bruno Walter: Portrait Directed by Janos Darvas The film portrays Bruno Walter (1876-1962), one of the most important conductors of the 20th century. The Italian biographer Michele Selvini speaks about the musician Bruno Walter who formed the musical life of the capitals of Europe and the United States over a period of 60 years. But so far not published film material also shows a different, not so known Bruno Walter as a private man.

The life I love - The pianist Menahem Pressler The music world has known Menahem Pressler for more than half a century and mainly for his work with the famous Beaux Arts Trio. He was the heart of this ensemble and when in 2008 the trio decided to separate, it was not the end for Menahem Pressler's career - in fact it was the start of a most remarkable and successful path as a soloist and in 2013, the 90-year-old grand seigneur of the piano gave his long overdue debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker. They are well-known for their ability to shift their style across a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop and jazz. Jiří Pokorny's "Words and Space" is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate, and very poetic. "Phoenix" is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth once again. Celibidache rehearses Bruckner No. 9 Münchner Philharmoniker, Sergiu Celibidache (conductor) In his late years, Sergiu Celibidache (1912-1996) focused his attention on one particular composer: Anton Bruckner. In March 1991 he rehearsed Bruckner's Ninth in unusually long and intense sessions with the Munich Philharmonics. Using unpublished footage, this film shows the individual stages of this tantalizing process of a seemingly familiar piece being rediscovered. Again and again Celibidache interrupts the musicians to communicate his sharply articulated thoughts. Theory and practical work aren't opposed anymore. In addition to the rehearsals, the film also shows interviews with Celibidache and accompanies him to St. Florian, near Linz in Upper Austria, where Bruckner was buried. Wagner's Jews Richard Wagner was notoriously anti-Semitic, and his writings on Jews were later embraced by Hitler and the Nazis. But for years, many of Wagner's closest associates were Jews - young musicians who became personally devoted to him, and provided crucial help to his work and career. Why were they drawn to him? And how could Wagner even accept their embrace? These questions are at the heart of 'Wagner's Jews', the first film to focus on Wagner's complex personal relationships with Jews. The life I love - The pianist Menahem Pressler The music world has known Menahem Pressler for more than half a century and mainly for his work with the famous Beaux Arts Trio. He was the heart of this ensemble and when in 2008 the trio decided to separate, it was not the end for Menahem Pressler's career - in fact it was the start of a most remarkable and successful path as a soloist and in 2013, the 90-year-old grand seigneur of the piano gave his long overdue debut with the Berliner Philharmoniker.
