Barenboim on Beethoven (Barenboim on Beethoven), Didžioji Britanija, 2020
Directed by Christopher Nupen 1970 was the 200th anniversary of Ludwig van Beethoven's birth and, to mark the occasion, Daniel Barenboim and Christopher Nupen collaborated on a thirteen-part series about the man and his music. Close friends at the time, Barenboim as artist and Nupen as filmmaker, were on the cusp of long and illustrious careers in music. Much of the material they shot has never been broadcast and, until recently, the footage had lain dormant for half a century. Now the series has been resurrected in its original form. It was recorded when Daniel Barenboim was in his late twenties, full of talent, charisma and early authority. During the episodes, he talks and plays extracts at the piano, illustrating the defining characteristics of Beethoven's compositions and sharing his personal insight into the composer's mindset. Throughout, he addresses the camera directly as presenter, adding to the intensity of the narrative. For orchestral pieces, he conducts the New Philharmonia Orchestra or plays at the piano with Sir Adrian Boult taking the conductor's baton. "Barenboim On Beethoven" is a musical journey charting Beethoven's progression in the context of his contemporaries such as Mozart and Haydn. Over twenty key compositions are performed and dissected, making this a unique body of work. |

In German, "Betroffenheit" denotes a state of shock and disbelief. This unusual ballet was inspired by terrible events in the life of choreographer Young, who lost his daughter, niece, and nephew in a terrible fire during a family vacation. A mix of tap, salsa, spoken-word, song, and puppet show, this stirring artistic statement is guaranteed to stir the emotions with its poignant depiction of personal hardship and of the struggle to come to terms with tragedy, beautifully realized by Kidd Pivot and the Electric Company Theatre on the stage of London's Sadler's Wells Theatre. Rivalry in Music (Die großen Musikrivalen), Miuziklas, Biografinis, Vokietija, 2020
Rivalry in Music - Schönberg vs. Stravinsky At the beginning of the 20th century, two famous composers were at the avant-garde while being at the antipodes: Igor Stravinsky, elegant and sophisticated, who revolutionized rhythm on the one hand - and on the other the intellectual and misanthropic Arnold Schoenberg with his visionary 12-tone technique. What began as a respectful meeting between these two composers soon turned into a bitter rivalry that led to a fundamental debate about progress and truth in music. Directed by Sylvie Kürsten 2021 |

Pierre Boulez, Académie du Festival de Lucerne (Pierre Boulez and the Lucerne Festival Academy - Inheriting the Future of Music), Vokietija, 2009
For more than six decades, Pierre Boulez has had greater influence on the development of contemporary music than anyone else. Already in younger days, he gained a reputation as a doughty champion of the avant-garde. With his compositions, interpretations, and ideas he indelibly shaped the international music scene - not only as a composer and conductor, but also as a music philosopher and teacher. The documentary "Inheriting the Future of Music: Pierre Boulez and the Lucerne Festival Academy" is a homage to him on the occasion of his 85th birthday on 26 March 2010. For the past five summers, Pierre Boulez and highly gifted young musicians from all over the world have converged for intensive rehearsal weeks during which they learn from the maestro and one another, discuss and play selected compositions, and finally present subsequently the fruits of their labour in a number of outstanding concerts. To convey the fascination for contemporary music, the documentary captures the perspectives of Pierre Boulez and the young conductors, composers, and musicians involved. Their infectious enthusiasm gives viewers an emotional access to the world of new music. Accompanied with retrospective accounts, this endeavour narrates significant experiences and encounters in Boulez' career and gives a graphical depiction of the way he passes these experiences on to his current students. Consequently, this makes selected works by Stravinsky, Stockhausen, and Boulez more approachable. On a different level, it demonstrates how strongly personal experiences leave their mark on individual action, aesthetic sensitivity, and our perception of others. |

Rachmaninov revisited (Rachmaninov Revisited), Miuziklas, Biografinis, JAV, 2020
Rachmaninov revisited Celebrated in his day not only as a great composer, Sergei Rachmaninov was also admired as an outstanding pianist who was a peerless interpreter of his own works including the piano concerti and the Rhapsody on a Theme by Paganini. It is well known that he was in effect the sole pianist capable of performing his most demanding Third Piano Concerto and his performances and recording of the concerto came to be considered as the definitive ones. The relationship between performance, interpretation, and Rachmaninov's own life is addressed in this film by young pianists. They explore the evolution of interpretation over the past few decades with brief excerpts of recordings by Rachmaninov as contrasted with contemporary performances by today's well-known young pianists as they comment on the differences (or similarities) of their approach.
