Closed - A Ballet from Real Life Many people live in a closed world. What happens to them when they step onto an arena where they can be themselves, free of their usual roles and status? In the film "Closed" we encounter four completely different people who once a week leave their everyday lives and get together in a closed café, where they get the opportunity and help to relax and momentarily distance themselves from reality. These encounters have a certain touch of ritual to them. Then, an alien element is introduced: A famous musician, the cellist Truls Mørk, has been given the proprietor's permission to rehearse a piece that he will later play in town. The music, Zoltan Kodály's Sonata for solo cello Op. 8, is intense and riveting and affects all four of them to an extent that has consequences for them all. The whole thing ends in mayhem, which perhaps was necessary for them all to be able to move on with their lives. Even the café gets a new lease of life, with a new proprietor. Rivalry in Music - Callas vs. Tebaldi Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi were the two most famous sopranos of the second half of the last century. Turned into hostile enemies by their admirers, the two became untouchable goddesses of opera. For their fans, Callas was known as "the tigress", Tebaldi as "the voice of an angel": the two singers could hardly have been more different, whether in their professional or private lives. To this day, Callas remains perhaps the greatest soprano of all time. Her rival, Tebaldi, is best known to opera lovers. Why is the posthumous fame of the two prima donnas so different? La grande danza - Aterballetto in Milan Choreographies by Jiří Pokorny (Words & Space), Giuseppe Spota (Narcissus), Philippe Kratz (Phoenix) Aterballetto is the principal producing and touring dance company in Italy. They are well-known for their ability to shift their style across a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop and jazz. Jiří Pokorny's "Words and Space" is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate, and very poetic. "Phoenix" is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth once again. Choreographer Philippe Kratz tries to understand who we were and what we are capable to become. In "Narcissus" Giuseppe Spota takes a look at the youth of today. Two men without whom the profession of conductor would not be what it is today. Two men who couldn't be more different from each other: Arturo Toscanini and Wilhelm Furtwängler. The former was rigorously faithful to the musical score, the latter conducted with radical subjectivity. In 1931 they both conducted at the Bayreuth Festival - for the first and last time. Soon the polite rivalry turned into bitter enmity. Both men were forced to take a stand on the regimes in their respective countries - and chose radically different paths. Toscanini, "the dictator", bravely challenged Mussolini; Furtwängler, a conservative, meanwhile proclaimed that art is always apolitical and reluctantly made a pact with the Nazis. The documentary not only opens up the different musical universes of the two great conductors by retracing their careers in Milan, Bayreuth and New York, but also raises a question that is more topical than ever: what has art to do with politics? Rivalry in Music - Callas vs. Tebaldi Maria Callas and Renata Tebaldi were the two most famous sopranos of the second half of the last century. Turned into hostile enemies by their admirers, the two became untouchable goddesses of opera. For their fans, Callas was known as "the tigress", Tebaldi as "the voice of an angel": the two singers could hardly have been more different, whether in their professional or private lives. La grande danza - Aterballetto in Milan Choreographies by Jiří Pokorny (Words & Space), Giuseppe Spota (Narcissus), Philippe Kratz (Phoenix) Aterballetto is the principal producing and touring dance company in Italy. They are well-known for their ability to shift their style across a wide range of musical genres, from classical to pop and jazz. Jiří Pokorny's "Words and Space" is a metaphor of an intrapersonal speech, a book full of floating stories. It is personal, intimate, and very poetic. "Phoenix" is inspired by the idea of the infinite circular motion of life: Birth, growth, immobility, death and finally birth once again. Choreographer Philippe Kratz tries to understand who we were and what we are capable to become. In "Narcissus" Giuseppe Spota takes a look at the youth of today. Are they ready to come out of their virtual frames and face the mirror ofeveryday life? Or will they all end up like Narcissus,alone to admire and cherish themselves? Directed by Andreas Morell
